Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?

So you’ve got a tattoo that for whatever reason, you’ve decided you no longer want. Maybe the tattoo just doesn’t “vibe” with you anymore, maybe the tattoo ink colors have faded a bit or the work was sub-par to begin with, or maybe you even crossed the line of getting someones name tattooed into your skin only to no longer be with that person.

Whatever the reason, you are here because you’re wanting to know more about how tattoo removal works.

One of the first questions people always have in this regard is this:

“Does it hurt?”

In a way, it’s almost a funny question to ask because I think the person asking already knows the answer to the question about whether or not it hurts to have a tattoo removed via the laser tattoo removal method.

Can you guess it? I’ll give you a hint…. it doesn’t feel good, that’s for sure.

To be clear:

Yes, laser tattoo removal hurts!

BUT – you shouldn’t let that stop you from proceeding if you want your tattoo gone.

The pain is not unbearable. Thousands of people get their tattoo removed using laser tattoo removal and they deal with the pain just fine. If all these other tattooed individuals are able to deal with the discomfort of the laser removal process, then why couldn’t you do the same?

The fact of the matter is that if you were able to sit through and get your body inked up with a tattoo in the first place, you experienced medium to considerable pain (depending on the location of the tattoo) in the process of getting a tattoo. Removing the same tattoo is also going to hurt, but rest assured, if you made it out alive the first time around, you’ll do just fine the second time around having it removed with a laser.

What does it actually feel like though?

The question of what laser tattoo removal itself feels like is an interesting one.

Pain is subjective, and the description of such an experience is hard to pin down in specifics in a way that make sense to those who’ve experienced and makes sense for those trying to imagine what it feels like.

That being said, people often describe the feeling such as a intense prick or pitch. Imagine if you had a sunburn, and someone pricked your skin quickly. That sharp, tiny little focused bit of pain is similar to what it feels like when having a targeted laser slowly but surely remove the tattoo out of the body’s skin.

In Summary

To sum it all up: yes, laser tattoo removal hurts, but it doesn’t hurt so bad that it should effect your decision about getting your tattoo removed.
